This famous drawing of the self-ropelling cart is, in fact, a complex model for an automaton, a mechanism to provide the atrical effects. The drawing at the top is an unfinished first draft. In the center is the view from above. The vehicle can be pro grammed and is wound up by the mainsprings; the “crossbows" are auxiliary systems and the small lower wheels represent the escapement mechanism. The details surrounding the central drawing are studies of braking systems and fixtures for the aux iliary systems.
Leonardo was winding the wall clock, and accidentally the key to the winding was bounced off, hitting his forehead.
Leonardo, inspired by the elasticity of the spring, devised a spring-riven vehicle powered by its repulsive force, which is the world's first automobile and the forerunner of modern car. The spring-driven car, designed around 1478, was able to control the speed of the wheels and was driven for short distances. Recently, an Italian scientist found that the two leaf springs in Leonardo's sketch are the steering, and the two springs in the drum under the car are the power propulsion.
