And the angel's body was bared, and he was clothed in light so that eye could not look on him; and his voice grew louder, as though it came not from him but from heaven above. And the angel said:

 

천사의 몸이 드러나고 빛으로 덮여 눈으로 바라볼 수가 없게 되었다. 천사의 목소리는 마치 천사가 아니라 하늘에서 들려온 것처럼 커졌다. 그리고 천사가 말했다.

 

"I have learnt that all men live not by care for themselves but by love. It was not given to the mother to know what her children needed for their life. Nor was it given to the rich man to know what he himself needed. Nor is it given to any man to know whether, when evening comes, he will need boots for his body or slippers for his corpse.

 

“저는 모든 사람이 자신을 돌보는 것이 아니라 사랑으로 산다는 것을 배웠습니다. 어머니는 자녀들의 삶에 필요한 것이 무엇인지 알지 못했습니다. 그 부유한 남자도 그 자신이 무엇을 필요로 하는지 알지 못했습니다. 어떤 사람도 저녁이 되면 신을 장화가 필요할지, 아니면 시체를 위해 실내화가 필요할지 알지 못합니다.

 

I remained alive when I was a man, not by care of myself, but because love was present in a passer-by, and because he and his wife pitied and loved me. The orphans remained alive not because of their mother's care, but because there was love in the heart of a woman, a stranger to them, who pitied and loved them. And all men live not by the thought they spend on their own welfare, but because love exists in man.

 

저는 사람이 되었을 때 제 자신을 돌보는 것이 아니라 지나가는 사람이 베푼 사랑 때문에, 그리고 그와 그의 아내가 저를 불쌍히 여기고 사랑했기 때문에 살 수 있었습니다. 고아들이 살아 있는 것은 그들을 어머니의 보살핌이 아니라, 그들을 불쌍히 여기고 사랑했던 한 낯선 여자의 가슴 안에 있는 사랑 때문이었습니다. 그리고 모든 사람은 그들 자신의 행복을 위한 생각이 아니라, 사랑이 사람에게 존재하기 때문에 사는 것입니다.

 

 

I knew before that God gave life to men and desires that they should live; now I understood more than that. I understood that God does not wish men to live apart, and therefore he does not reveal to them what each one needs for himself; but he wishes them to live united, and therefore reveals to each of them what is necessary for all. I have now understood that though it seems to men that they live by care for themselves, in truth it is love alone by which they live. He who has love, is in God, and God is in him, for God is love."

 

저는 신이 사람에게 생명을 주시고 사람이 살기를 바란다는 걸 알고 있었지만, 이제는 그것보다 더 많은 것을 이해하게 되었습니다. 신은 사람이 떨어져서 사는 것을 바라지 않으시며, 각자가 자신에게 무엇이 필요한지 드러내지 않으시지만, 그들이 하나가 되어 살기를 원하시며, 그리하여 모든 사람들에게 필요한 것을 각 사람에게 밝히신다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 저는 사람들이 스스로만을 돌보며 사는 것처럼 보이지만, 사실은 그들이 사랑에 의해서만 산다는 것을 이해했습니다. 사랑이 있는 사람은 신 안에 있고, 신은 그 사람 안에 있습니다. 신은 사랑이기 때문입니다.”

 

And the angel sang praise to God, so that the hut trembled at his voice. The roof opened, and a column of fire rose from earth to heaven. Simon and his wife and children fell to the ground. Wings appeared upon the angel's shoulders, and he rose into the heavens. And when Simon came to himself the hut stood as before, and there was no one in it but his own family.

 

천사가 신을 찬양하는 노래를 부르자, 오두막집은 천사의 목소리로 진동했다. 지붕이 열리고 불기둥이 땅에서 하늘로 솟았다. 시몬과 그의 아내와 아이들은 바닥에 쓰러졌다. 천사의 어깨에 날개가 나타나더니 그는 하늘로 올라갔다. 시몬이 정신을 차려 보니, 그 오두막은 그대로였다. 그리고 그 집에는 자기 가족 외에는 아무도 없었다.
