The woman went away with the girls. Michael rose from the bench, put down his work, and took off his apron. Then, bowing low to Simon and his wife, he said: "Farewell, masters. God has forgiven me. I ask your forgiveness, too, for anything done amiss."

 

여자는 아이들을 데리고 떠났다. 미카엘은 의자에서 일어나 일감을 내려놓고 앞치마를 벗었다. 그러고 나서 시몬과 그의 아내에게 인사한 다음 말했다. “안녕히 계십시오. 신께서 저를 용서하셨습니다. 두 분이 했던 잘못에 대해서도 용서를 구합니다.”

 

And they saw that a light shone from Michael. And Simon rose, bowed down to Michael, and said: "I see, Michael, that you are no common man, and I can neither keep you nor question you. Only tell me this: how is it that when I found you and brought you home, you were gloomy, and when my wife gave you food you smiled at her and became brighter? Then when the gentleman came to order the boots, you smiled again and became brighter still? And now, when this woman brought the little girls, you smiled a third time, and have become as bright as day? Tell me, Michael, why does your face shine so, and why did you smile those three times?"

And Michael answered: "Light shines from me because I have been punished, but now God has pardoned me. And I smiled three times, because God sent me to learn three truths, and I have learnt them. One I learnt when your wife pitied me, and that is why I smiled the first time. The second I learnt when the rich man ordered the boots, and then I smiled again. And now, when I saw those little girls, I learn the third and last truth, and I smiled the third time."

 

미카엘이 대답하였다. "제게서 빛이 나오는 것은 제가 벌을 받았지만 이제는 신께서 저를 용서해 주셨기 때문입니다. 그리고 제가 세 번 미소를 지은 것은 신께서 세 가지 진리를 배우라고 보내셨기 때문입니다. 그리고 제가 그것들을 배웠습니다. 첫 번째는 당신의 아내가 절 불쌍히 여겼을 때 배웠고, 그래서 처음으로 미소를 지었지요. 두 번째는 그 부유한 남자가 장화를 주문했을 때 배웠고, 난 다시 미소를 지었습니다. 그리고 지금, 제가 그 작은 여자아이들을 보면서 세 번째이자 마지막 진리를 배웠고, 세 번째로 미소를 지은 것입니다.”

 

And Simon said, "Tell me, Michael, what did God punish you for? and what were the three truths? that I, too, may know them."

And Michael answered: "God punished me for disobeying Him. I was an angel in heaven and disobeyed God. God sent me to fetch a woman's soul. I flew to earth, and saw a sick woman lying alone, who had just given birth to twin girls. They moved feebly at their mother's side, but she could not lift them to her breast. When she saw me, she understood that God had sent me for her soul, and she wept and said: 'Angel of God! My husband has just been buried, killed by a falling tree. I have neither sister, nor aunt, nor mother: no one to care for my orphans. Do not take my soul! Let me nurse my babes, feed them, and set them on their feet before I die. Children cannot live without father or mother.' And I hearkened to her. I placed one child at her breast and gave the other into her arms, and returned to the Lord in heaven. I flew to the Lord, and said: 'I could not take the soul of the mother. Her husband was killed by a tree; the woman has twins, and prays that her soul may not be taken. She says: "Let me nurse and feed my children, and set them on their feet. Children cannot live without father or mother." I have not taken her soul.'

 

미카엘이 대답했다. "신은 제가 신을 거역한 것을 벌주셨습니다. 저는 천사였는데 신의 말을 거역했습니다. 신께서 제게 한 여자의 영혼을 데려오라 하셨어요. 저는 지상으로 내려와 쌍둥이 딸을 낳은 아픈 여자가 혼자 누워있는 것을 보았습니다. 그들은 어머니 곁에서 힘없이 움직였지만, 어머니는 그들을 가슴에 안아 올릴 수 없었습니다. 그 여자는 저를 보고, 신께서 자기의 영혼을 거두기 위해 절 보냈다는 걸 알고 눈물을 흘리며 말했습니다. ‘신의 천사님! 제 남편은 떨어지는 나무에 깔려 죽었고, 방금 땅에 묻혔습니다. 저에게는 자매도 친척도 어머니도 없고, 고아가 된 제 아이들을 보살필 사람도 없습니다. 제 영혼을 빼앗지 마세요! 제가 죽기 전에 제 아이들을 먹이고 키워서, 그들의 힘으로 설 수 있게 될 때까지 만 이요. 아이들은 아버지나 어머니 없이는 살 수 없습니다.’ 그리고 저는 그녀의 말을 들었습니다. 그리고 한 아이를 가슴에, 다른 아이를 팔에 안겨 주고 하늘에 계신 신께 돌아갔습니다. 전 신 앞에 나아가 말씀드렸어요. ‘그 어머니의 영혼을 데려올 수 없었습니다. 그녀의 남편은 나무에 의해 죽임을 당했는데, 그 여자는 쌍둥이를 낳았고, 그녀는 자신의 영혼이 빼앗기지 않기를 기도했습니다. 그녀가 말하길, "제가 이 아이들에게 젖을 먹이고, 그들이 스스로 일어서게 해 주십시오. 아이들은 아버지나 어머니 없이 살 수 없습니다." 그래서 저는 그녀의 영혼을 빼앗지 않았습니다.'

 

And God said: 'Go-take the mother's soul, and learn three truths: Learn What dwells in man, What is not given to man, and What men live by. When thou has learnt these things, thou shalt return to heaven.'

 

그러자 신께서 말씀하시길 ‘가서 그 어머니의 영혼을 가져다가 세 가지 진리를 배워라. 사람에게 무엇이 있고, 사람에게 무엇이 주어지지 않았는가를 배워라. 또 사람이 무엇으로 사는지를 배워라. 네가 이 모든 것을 배웠을 때 너는 다시 여기로 돌아오게 될 것이다.’ 

 

So I flew again to earth and took the mother's soul. The babes dropped from her breasts. Her body rolled over on the bed and crushed one babe, twisting its leg. I rose above the village, wishing to take her soul to God; but a wind seized me, and my wings drooped and dropped off. Her soul rose alone to God, while I fell to earth by the roadside."

 

그래서 저는 다시 지상으로 내려와 그 어머니의 영혼을 불렀습니다. 갓난아이들이 여자의 가슴에서 떨어졌지요. 그녀의 몸이 침대 위로 뒹굴더니 한 아기의 다리를 비틀었습니다. 저는 여자의 영혼을 신께 데려가려고 마을 위로 날아올랐습니다. 하지만 바람이 나를 엄습하였고 내 날개가 처져 떨어졌습니다. 내가 떨어져 지상의 길가 땅바닥에 엎드렸을 때에, 그 여자의 영혼은 하나님께 홀로 날아갔습니다.”
