Then Simon said to Michael: "Well, we have taken the work, but we must see we don't get into trouble over it. The leather is dear, and the gentleman hot-tempered. We must make no mistakes. Come, your eye is truer and your hands have become nimbler than mine, so you take this measure and cut out the boots. I will finish off the sewing of the vamps."

 

시몬이 미카엘에게 말하였다. "우리가 이 일을 맡기는 했지만, 이 일로 곤란해지면 안 돼. 가죽은 비싸고, 그 신사는 다혈질이야. 그러니 우리는 절대 실수해서는 안 돼. 이봐, 네 눈은 더 정확하고 네 손은 나보다 날렵해졌으니, 너는 이 치수대로 부츠를 자르게. 수선하는 일은 내가 마무리하겠네.

 

Michael did as he was told. He took the leather, spread it out on the table, folded it in two, took a knife and began to cut out. 

 

미카엘은 그가 말한 대로 했다. 그는 가죽을 탁자 위에 올려놓고 반으로 접은 두 개로 접어서, 칼을 들고 잘라내기 시작했다.

 

Matryona came and watched him cutting, and was surprised to see how he was doing it. Matryona was accustomed to seeing boots made, and she looked and saw that Michael was not cutting the leather for boots, but was cutting it round. She wished to say something, but she thought to herself: "Perhaps I do not understand how gentleman's boots should be made. I suppose Michael knows more about it--and I won't interfere."

 

마트료나가 와서 미카엘이 마름질하는 걸 보고는 놀랐다. 마트료나는 장화를 만드는 모습에 익숙했는데, 미카엘은 그가 장화를 만들 때처럼 가죽을 자르지 않고 둥글게 자르는 것을 보았다. 그녀는 뭔가를 말하고 싶었지만, 혼자 생각했다: "부유층 남자들의 장화는 내가 모르는 다른 방법으로 만드는지도 몰라. 난 미카엘이 더 잘 알 거라 생각해. 그러니 간섭하지 말아야지."

 

 

When Michael had cut up the leather, he took a thread and began to sew not with two ends, as boots are sewn, but with a single end, as for soft slippers. Again Matryona wondered, but again she did not interfere. Michael sewed on steadily till noon. Then Simon rose for dinner, looked around, and saw that Michael had made slippers out of the gentleman's leather.

 

미카엘은 가죽을 자른 뒤 실을 꺼내 꿰매기 시작했는데 장화를 꿰맬 때처럼 실 두 가닥으로 꿰매지 않고, 부드러운 실내화를 꿰맬 때처럼 실 한 가닥을 사용했다. 다시 마트료나는 의아해했지만, 여전히 간섭하지 않았다. 미카엘은 정오까지 꾸준히 바느질을 했다. 그러자 시몬은 저녁을 먹기 위해 일어나서 주위를 둘러보다가 마이클이 신사의 가죽으로 슬리퍼를 만든 것을 보았다.

 

"Ah, " groaned Simon, and he thought, "How is it that Michael, who has been with me a whole year and never made a mistake before, should do such a dreadful thing? The gentleman ordered high boots, welted, with whole fronts, and Michael has made soft slippers with single soles, and has wasted the leather. What am I to say to the gentleman? I can never replace leather such as this."

 

"아, " 시몬이 신음하며, 속으로 생각했다. "어떻게 일 년 동안이나 나와 함께 지내면서도 한 번도 잘못을 저지르지 않은 미카엘이 이런 무서운 일을 저지를 수 있을까? 그 신사는 목이 길고 튼튼하고 구두코가 있는 장화를 만들라고 주문했는데 마이클은 밑창이 하나뿐인 부드러운 슬리퍼를 만들어 가죽을 낭비했어. 그 신사분에게 무슨 말을 할 수 있을까? 이런 가죽은 절대 구할 수 없는데."

 

And he said to Michael, "What are you doing, friend? You have ruined me! You know the gentleman ordered high boots, but see what you have made!"

 

그리고 그가 미카엘에게 말했다, "뭐하는 거야? 네가 날 망쳤어! 그 신사가 하이 부츠를 주문했다는 것을 알지 않나? 그런데 네가 무엇을 만들었는지 보게나!"

 

Hardly had he begun to rebuke Michael, when "rat-tat" went the iron ring that hung at the door. Some one was knocking. They looked out of the window; a man had come on horseback, and was fastening his horse. They opened the door, and the servant who had been with the gentleman came in.

 

그가 미카엘을 비난하기 시작했을 때, 곧바로 쾅쾅 문 두드리는 소리와 함께 문간에 달려 있는 철제 고리가 울렸다. 누군가 노크를 하고 있었다. 그들이 창밖을 내다보자, 어떤 남자가 타고 온 말을 붙들어 매고 있었다. 그들이 문을 열자, 그 부유한 신사와 함께 왔던 하인이 들어왔다.

 

 

"Good day, " said he.

Good day," replied Simon. "What can we do for you?"

"My mistress has sent me about the boots."

"What about the boots?"

"Why, my master no longer needs them. He is dead."

"Is it possible?"

 

"안녕하세요."라고 그가 말했다.
"안녕하세요." 시몬이 대답했다. "무슨 일이십니까?"
"저희 여주인께서 그 장화 때문에 저를 보냈습니다."
"장화요?"
"왜냐면, 주인님은 더 이상 그것들을 필요로 하지 않아요. 돌아가셨습니다."
"뭐라고요?"

 

"He did not live to get home after leaving you, but died in the carriage. When we reached home and the servants came to help him alight, he rolled over like a sack. He was dead already, and so stiff that he could hardly be got out of the carriage. My mistress sent me here, saying: 'Tell the bootmaker that the gentleman who ordered boots of him and left the leather for them no longer needs the boots, but that he must quickly make soft slippers for the corpse. Wait till they are ready, and bring them back with you.' That is why I have come."

 

“아까 집으로 돌아 가던 길에 마차에서 돌아가셨어요. 우리가 집에 도착했을 때, 하인들이 주인님을 내려주려고 왔을 때, 큰 자루처럼 넘어져 계셨어요. 주인님은 이미 돌아가신 뒤였고 마차 밖으로 꺼낼 수 없을 만큼 몸이 뻣뻣해져 있었지요. 그래서 여주인께서 저를 이곳에 보내면서 이렇게 말하셨습니다. '구두장이에게 가서 이제 장화가 필요하지 않고, 시체를 위한 부드러운 실내화를 빨리 만들어 달라고 해라. 그들이 준비해줄 때까지 기다렸다가, 실내화를 가지고 오너라.' 그래서 제가 여기 온 것입니다."

 

Michael gathered up the remnants of the leather; rolled them up, took the soft slippers he had made, slapped them together, wiped them down with his apron, and handed them and the roll of leather to the servant, who took them and said: "Good-bye, masters, and good day to you!"

 

미카엘은 남은 가죽을 모아서 돌돌 말고, 이미 만들어 둔 부드러운 실내화를 꺼내 함께 포갠 후 앞치마로 닦았고, 남은 가죽과 함께 실내화를 건네주었다. 그러자 하인이 그것들을 받아 들고 말했다. “안녕히 계십시오!”
